Earliest Known Black Marriage Record, 1598

This document is shown with special permission from the Catholic Archdiocese of St. Augustine, FL

Augustin and Francisca  married on the third Sunday before Lent of 1598, in St. Augustine Catholic Diocese. This is the earliest known African American marriage record in what later became the United States. This establishes the existence of African Americans twelve years before the founding of Jamestown.

Translation:

Today, Septuagesima Sunday (the third Sunday before Lent), 1598, Father Richard Arthur married Agustín and Francisca, negra of Doña Petronilla.  Their sponsors were Simon, negro, and Maria, negra. This being true, I sign my name.
